Make no mistake, the shit in this movie looks fucking real. Absolutely photo realistic. Sure, the 3D is great, very subtle, and it totally immerses you in the movie, but that doesn’t scare me nearly as much as this CGI/motion capture thing

I had a good discussion with my friend Craig about how 5-10 years from now there will never be another “White Ribbon” or “Synecdoche, New York.” There will simply be no market for a film like that. They just can’t compete. Sure, “film” will be around, but it’ll be such a niche art thing they’d have to be funded by the Guggenheim.

I feel we are headed for a type of “S1m0ne” situation. If you don’t recall, that’s a pretty bad movie about a director who digitally creates his actress, and overnight she becomes the worlds biggest celebrity.

Think about it, how much does Angelina Jolie make a picture? $15 Million? I don’t see why in the foreseeable future we’d even need an actress. Sure, Avatar cost about $230 million to make, but at the rate technology is going, it’ll be even cheaper and easier to make another “Avatar” type film.

35mm film and projection is dead, “Intellectual” cinema is dead, and it’s happening right now because of you Mr. James Cameron. (Did you guys know James Cameron reads my blog!?)

Having said that, “Avatar” is pretty fucking awesome, but still, fin du cinema.

Christopher Newman:

Today at school, this man came into class and helped us shoot a film. We did a little scene from ‘Half-Nelson’ in order to learn about sound.

This man, Christopher Newman, is a three-time Academy Award winner and has worked as a sound mixer on such films as The French Connection, The Godfather, The Exorcist, etc.

His number is in my phone book. I mean, seriously, what a badass. This dude teaches at SVA, gives all the kids his contact info, and is like “LEARN FROM ME.”

I hope to be this cool someday.

Finished And Here’s The Kicker this morning. Awesome book. Lots of great quotes and stories. READ IT.

I also recommend this book—whether you’re a comedy writer or not! Nick and I spent most of 4th of July weekend fighting over whose “turn” it was to read it.

I love this book. I’ve been reading it non-stop.
